Do I need a car, or is the train enough?
High-speed and regional trains connect Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, Naples and other cities quickly, so city-focused trips rarely need a car. For the Tuscan countryside, Puglia, Sicily, Sardinia and the lakes, a rental car gives you the most freedom, though the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre are often easier by boat, bus or train than by car.

Families tend to favour farmhouse villas with pools in Tuscany and Umbria, Lake Garda's shallower shores and Puglia's beaches.
